This appearance is typical for a mucinous borderline tumor - although not pathognomonic and has overlap with both mucinous cystadenomas, as well as malignant lesions e.g. low grade mucinous adenocarcinoma. Ovarian borderline mucinous cystadenomas are a subtype of ovarian mucinous tumors and, as the name stands, are intermediate between mucinous cystadenomas and mucinous cystadenocarcinomas. The remaining 3%–4% of primary tumors are ovarian mucinous carcinomas ( 1 , 2 ). Benign mucinous tumors tend to affect women 20-40 years old, whereas borderline and malignant tumors tend to occur in a slightly older age range (40-50 years of age) 6, Pathology On histology they show multiple cysts lined by mucinous epithelium, often resembling gastrointestinal-type epithelium 6 .

Like most epithelial ovarian tumors, borderline papillary tumors are derived from serous or mucinous cell types. These tumors are a subset of ovarian epithelial neoplasms that are associated with extraovarian disease but have an indolent course and a more favorable prognosis than that typical of their malignant counterparts (, 1 –, 4). Borderline ovarian tumors represent a heterogeneous group of noninvasive tumors of uncertain malignant potential with characteristic histology. They occur in younger women, are present at an early stage, and have a favorable prognosis, but symptomatic recurrence and death may be found as long as 20 years after therapy in some patients.

The present study aimed to assess the efficacy of MR imaging for differentiating between DEs and SMBTs of the ovary. The creation of the category of borderline/atypical proliferative tumors in the World Health Organization Classification of Ovarian Tumors in 1973 prompted extensive investigation of the clinicopathologic and genetic features of low-grade serous ovarian tumors (borderline tumors/atypical proliferative tumors, noninvasive micropapillary tumors, and invasive low-grade serous carcinomas). 68 year old woman with a benign Brenner tumor arising in an ectopic ovary (Int J Gynecol Pathol 2020 Sep 17 [Epub ahead of print]) Borderline Brenner tumor: 68 year old woman with borderline Brenner tumor (J Ovarian Res 2014;7:101) Malignant Brenner tumor: 2018-03-21 · Endometrioid Borderline Tumor of Ovary is an ovarian tumor with low or borderline malignant potential. A unique feature of borderline tumors is the non-invasive behavior of extra-ovarian tumor implants in the advanced stages of the disease 2-3. Implants can occur in the contralateral ovary, omentum, and peritoneal surface in the advanced stages, although they behave in a benign fashion and remain located on the surface of the underlying tissues. Our study shows that borderline tumors often present as complex adnexal masses; none was a purely simple cystic lesion. Thus, although borderline ovarian tumors may appear to be benign masses clinically, their radiologic features require differentiation from early invasive disease [3–6]. Both borderline and stage I tumors are usually multiloculated with significant solid elements. This article will review the sonographic, CT, and MRI features of borderline epithelial ovarian tumors with histopathologic correlation.
